NOTE: Dates are subject to change. Students must arrive in the host city and check into the program housing on the program start date. The program officially ends on the end date, and students must check out of the housing facilities at that time. Participants are responsible for arranging travel to and from the program and should WAIT to purchase airfare until they have been officially instructed by the Faculty Director, Program Provider, and/or Host University.

Program Description:
 

Study & Intern in Madrid

Improve your Spanish language skills and participate in an internship in Madrid, Spain's lively capital. Enroll in English-taught courses in business, finance, marketing, communications, religion, and more. Take excursions to historic Segovia and El Escorial, purchase a pair of colorful espadrilles, and enjoy all that this captivating city has to offer.

  • Courseload:
    • 13–16 credits per semester, 6 credits over summer session. Classes are held Monday–Thursday on the semester program, leaving long weekends for cultural immersion.

Faculty

The staff at Fundación Ortega-Marañon provide housing, program classrooms, and study areas. They also arrange the on-site orientation and program excursions, as well as social and cultural events. Classes are taught by Spanish and American faculty who are specialists in their academic field and in the field of teaching foreign students.

About This Program

This program is geared toward students who would like to improve their beginning or intermediate Spanish language skills and take English-taught courses. Areas of study include business, finance, marketing, communication and media, religion, and more. English-speaking internships are also available. This program also offers the opportunity for students to take English-taught courses at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.

The program is offered in partnership with the prestigious Fundación Ortega–Marañon in Madrid and the University of Minnesota. The Foundation is located in a central part of Madrid, near Paseo de la Castellana. Due to its location, it is easy to catch public transportation to any other part of the city.

Choose to live either with a Spanish host family (homestay) or in Colegio Mayor (residence hall).

  • Homestays: Students choosing to live with a host family will experience true Spanish life. Typically, you and your family will live in an apartment, since single family houses are not as common in Europe as in the US. You will have your own room and private study space. Most host families live near the Fundación Ortega-Marañon, so you will be within walking distance or a short ride away by bus or metro.
  • Colegio Mayor: You may also choose to live at the Colegio Mayor Santa María del Estudiante sharing a room with another program participant. The rooms include a wardrobe, desk, chair, bookcase, cable, and WiFi. At the residence hall, there are study rooms, a cafeteria, a fitness area, a swimming pool, a leisure/activity room, access to laundry facilities, and a weekly maid service. This option offers convenience and flexibility to come and go as you please.

A walking tour of Madrid will help you learn how to get around the city and also familiarize you with some of Madrid's iconic landmarks.

There are day-long excursions to Segovia and El Escorial (included in the program fee), as well as an optional four-day excursion to Andalucía (at an additional cost).

About the Learning Abroad Center

The Learning Abroad Center in the Global Programs and Strategy Alliance is the University of Minnesota's comprehensive resource for study, service-learning, work, intern, volunteer, and travel experiences worldwide.

WHAT IS AN AFFILIATE?

An Affiliate is a partner organization that is evaluated and approved by the University of Utah. Affiliates offer classes in both English and the host language. You may take classes with other U.S. students, international students, or students from the host country. Many affiliates provide special services such as visa support, housing, cultural excursions, and on-site staffing to help you navigate your host country.

APPLYING TO AN AFFILIATE PROGRAM

  1. Complete Learning Abroad 101. This is a short information session about programs, applications, financial aid, and scholarships. You can complete Learning Abroad 101 in-person or online.
  2. Submit your Applications. You will submit TWO Applications for this Program. These Applications can be completed at the same time.
    • U of U Application- Click Apply Now at the top of your screen to get started and submit the Initial Payment.
    • Affiliate Application- Click on the Homepage link above to find your Affiliate Application. Contact the Affiliate if you have questions.
  3. Commit to your U of U Application. You will receive an acceptance email to your Umail account. Log into your U of U Application and Commit to your Program within 3 business days of acceptance!
  4. Upload your Affiliate Acceptance Letter. When you receive your acceptance letter from the Affiliate, upload a copy in your U of U Application.
  5. Complete the Post-Decision Steps. Finish the Post-Decision steps in your U of U Application by the deadlines provided.

  • TENTATIVE dates are listed above. Compare the dates to the University of Utah academic calendar to avoid scheduling conflicts.
  • You are responsible for arranging transportation to and from the host country for most Programs.

PROGRAM ADVISING

  • Program advising is available through our Learning Abroad Coordinators.
  • You will automatically be assigned to a Coordinator when you start your U of U Application. Coordinators are assigned based on your major.
  • You must complete Learning Abroad 101 before meeting with a Coordinator.
