Challenge yourself to take your engineering studies to the next level in Madrid! Whether your thing is aerospace or biomedical engineering, you'll find rigorous courses in English and Spanish that expand your thinking with theory and case studies alike. Travel beyond Madrid to investigate engineering feats in other parts of Spain. Take a breath to discover Madrid's many treasures, from the premier Prado museum to tapas at the lively San Miguel market.

  • Visit some of the country's top-ranking engineering companies, like Iberdrola, Repsol, FCC, and Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas SA.
  • Take a weekend trip to a city like Barcelona, Bilbao, or Sevilla to see regional differences in urban design, engineering, and traditional architecture.
  • Take walking and biking tours that include stops tourists often miss.
  • Absorb Spanish culture with a cooking class, a flamenco class with by dinner and a show; and visits to the Rastro open-air market, local festivals, and celebrations in and around the city.
  • Meet Spanish peers through the Spanish Student Network, a group of university students that accompany students for CIEE activities and events.
  • Take advantage of campus sports facilities and fitness programs.

Projects

Volunteering. We're ready to help you help kids, teens, and disabled people in Madrid, through schools, associations, and outreach programs.

Peer-to-peer language support. Practice your Spanish skills and make a new friend with our language exchange program.

Tutors and study groups. Sign up for a UC3M faculty-led study group for one of your STEM courses. Gain a credit get the support you need to complete course work as needed. With CIEE supervision, students can also find a grad student or classmate to help them get the most of class. In general, tutors meet for one hour, once a week.

Internships. Got advanced Spanish skills? Engineering internships are competitive here, but we'll help you make it happen.

WHAT IS AN AFFILIATE?

An Affiliate is a partner organization that is evaluated and approved by the University of Utah. Affiliates offer classes in both English and the host language. You may take classes with other U.S. students, international students, or students from the host country. Many affiliates provide special services such as visa support, housing, cultural excursions, and on-site staffing to help you navigate your host country.

APPLYING TO AN AFFILIATE PROGRAM

  1. Complete Learning Abroad 101. This is a short information session about programs, applications, financial aid, and scholarships. You can complete Learning Abroad 101 in-person or online.
  2. Submit your Applications. You will submit TWO Applications for this Program. These Applications can be completed at the same time.
    • U of U Application- Click Apply Now at the top of your screen to get started and submit the Initial Payment.
    • Affiliate Application- Click on the Homepage link above to find your Affiliate Application. Contact the Affiliate if you have questions.
  3. Commit to your U of U Application. You will receive an acceptance email to your Umail account. Log into your U of U Application and Commit to your Program within 3 business days of acceptance!
  4. Upload your Affiliate Acceptance Letter. When you receive your acceptance letter from the Affiliate, upload a copy in your U of U Application.
  5. Complete the Post-Decision Steps. Finish the Post-Decision steps in your U of U Application by the deadlines provided.

  • TENTATIVE dates are listed above. Compare the dates to the University of Utah academic calendar to avoid scheduling conflicts.
  • You are responsible for arranging transportation to and from the host country for most Programs.
  • Do not purchase your flight until you read the instructions in the Learning Abroad Handbook.

PROGRAM ADVISING

  • Program advising is available through our Learning Abroad Coordinators.
  • You will automatically be assigned to a Coordinator when you start your U of U Application. Coordinators are assigned based on your major.
  • You must complete Learning Abroad 101 before meeting with a Coordinator.
